About Latham & Watkins

Latham & Watkins is a global law firm consistently ranked among the top firms in the world. The success of our firm is largely determined by our commitment to hire and develop the very best and brightest, creating a team that provides our clients with the highest quality of work and service. We are driven by our core values: respect, innovation, and collaboration.

About the Role

The Strategic Advisory and Finance Lead is an integral part of Latham’s Financial Analysis team and will be responsible for providing insight into the economic performance and financial health of clients, matters, and legal teams, while building and maintaining complex analytical models that leverage the firm’s data to provide insightful analysis and responding to specific requests of business partners and leading those colleagues toward a robust financial outcome. This role will be located in our Global Services Office located in downtown Los Angeles office. Please note that this role may be eligible for a flexible working schedule that allows for a hybrid and in-office presence.

Our team hails from a wide range of industries and spans the globe, with a presence in Hong Kong, London, Manchester, and Los Angeles. We provide insight into the economic performance and financial health of clients, matters, and legal teams. At our core, we provide financial insights to partners, either directly or in partnership with other business partners at the Firm, aiming to make a difference for both individual partners and the Firm. Given the Firm’s global reach and the fact that our attorneys advise institutions that power the global economy, our work is highly dynamic, with no two days the same.

We leverage access to financial data and our robust, in-depth understanding of the Firm’s revenue metrics and the Firm’s business to provide analytical insight on key strategic issues. We collaborate directly with the firm’s most senior leaders, the firm’s partners and associates, and our peers in Business Development, Attorney Development, Pro Bono, Knowledge Management, and Strategic Library Services. Our core work improves client retention, accelerates inventory turnover, optimizes attorney staffing, reduces fee write-offs, evaluates the strengths and opportunities of our legal practices, assesses the strategic value of current clients, and estimates the potential value of new offices and acquisitions.

The team’s leaders are guided by a simple philosophy: recruit smart, driven analysts interested in learning from a team, provide training and direction, then ask them to make the team and our work better; maximize innovation and collaboration by fostering an environment of trust through honest and continuous conversation; lead by example.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Leveraging project management principles to manage firmwide financial projects and complete other complex financial requests needed by department management
  • Applying business, economic, finance, and accounting principles to the firm’s internal financial data to help firm leaders simplify and ultimately solve complex problems; leveraging SAP Business Objects to query data and Excel to effectively and efficiently synthesize that data
  • Ensuring emails received through the team’s shared email are handled in a timely professional manner, including prioritizing urgent requests, and ensuring effective handoff with the team in the next time zone
  • Developing standard tools for reporting and analyzing data
  • Maintaining detailed records documenting procedures and assumptions, methodologies, and sources of information employed during the performance of all analytical tasks

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Demonstrate excellent analytical skills
  • Display the ability to work independently to research, analyze, and develop financial information
  • Possess the organizational skills needed to manage time well, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines

And have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ analytical experience in finance or accounting
