About the Role

The Knowledge Management Lawyer (“KM Lawyer”) will be responsible for managing the creation, organization, and delivery of knowledge assets for the Structured Finance Practice Group (the “Practice”) in order to help our attorneys work at the highest level. The KM Lawyer will support the delivery of a broad portfolio of knowledge services for the Practice, including the monitoring of legal, market, trade association and regulatory developments, the preparation of communications, regulatory comment letters and tailored thought leadership pieces for clients, the creation of standard forms, guidance notes and training materials, and the collation, analysis and organization of precedent. 

 

The role will, ideally, be located in our New York, Chicago, Century City or San Francisco, offices. However, we are also open to considering all US office locations. Please note that this role may be eligible for a flexible working schedule that allows for a hybrid and in-office presence. Latham & Watkins has a well-established Knowledge Management team with defined career progression routes which recognize the experience our colleagues bring to their role. Whilst our expectation is that candidates will have five years or more practicing experience, we are open to candidates at all levels, including those with very significant experience in this field.

 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Key responsibilities include:

  • In coordination with the Practice Chairs and with assistance from other attorneys in the Practice, monitoring current legal, market, and industry developments and preparing high-quality communications, comment letters, and thought leadership materials for attorneys and clients regarding these developments, including in pitches, newsletters, client presentations, client alerts, media, and blog posts
  • Supporting the Practice’s internal training programs including setting the curriculum, delegating presentation tasks, preparing training materials and delivering training
  • Identifying, drafting, and maintaining Latham standard forms, precedent, and guidance materials, including relating to opinion practices
  • Coordinating and monitoring KM projects under the firm’s KM Initiative, working with the attorneys to bring these to fruition and to ensure they meet the team’s strategic objectives
  • Identifying, collecting, and organizing precedent and other work product for the Practice in the firm’s knowledge management databases and, where relevant, creating and updating intranet sites to ensure easy access to the Practice’s know-how
  • Liaising with industry bodies such as the Structured Finance Association, LSTA, SIFMA, and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, including reviewing and responding to consultation papers as well as following industry forms and practices
  • Generally acting as a sounding board for technical legal queries from attorneys relating to structured finance matters
  • Protecting and maintaining any highly sensitive, confidential, privileged, financial, and/or proprietary information that Latham & Watkins retains 

We’d love to hear from you if you:

  • Demonstrate extensive technical legal knowledge in the structured finance and derivatives sectors and in-depth industry knowledge, including familiarity with the major players in the industry and an understanding of terminology and resources
  • Display meticulous attention to detail
  • Possess outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal

And have:

  • A J.D., Bachelor of Laws, or an equivalent
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant law firm experience as a practicing attorney with extensive experience in structured finance law and regulation
